Using the Decad and Digits on Your Hands to Explore Patterns of Adding two Numbers Greater Than 5.
  • See Tetrys before you begin on this page. Follow instructions from Tetrys for each decad.
  • Then you will see an addition statement for two numbers > 5 between the hands. The addens will be represented of the hands with the thumbs representing the number 5.
  • The solution to the sum can easily be seen by counting, starting after 10, by the number of the extended fingers. Do not count thumbs.
  • For example, if the displayed sum is 7 + 8, there will be 2 and 3 fingers extended respectively equal 5.
  • So counting by these fingers after 10 gives 15 as the solution.
  • Clicking on the hands after the solution is revealed displays other sums that equal 15.
