PLACE VALUE SOLITAIRE
This activity uses the numbers on playing cards to explore place value by the addition and subtraction of powers of 10. When you click on the upper left deck of cards one card is displayed either a 1, 2 or 3 from one of the four suits. After you click the upper left deck, drag the displayed card into the adjacent green region. A vertical display of each suit will guide you to the proper place to position the dragged card. When the dragged card is position properly a beep will sound.The cards numerical value is a power of 10. Under the presentation region a multiplication or division statement is visible equal the respective product or quotient. The product or quotient will equal 10 multiplied by itself a number of times equal a given power. The 10's power term is displayed between the green regions. The power of 10 will equal the difference between the sum of the black cards and the sum of the red cards. (See Video Below) | |
As noted above, the difference between the sum of black numbered cards and the sum of red numbered cards placed in the leftside green region indicates the power of 10 equal the product or quotient of the numerical statement below the green region. The arrangement of the of the face down playing card in the rightside green region represents cycles of 1,000 by which place value increases.
